Checking M-Pesa payment status

M-Pesa Ethiopia publishes transaction data at https://m-pesabusiness.safaricom.et/api/receipt/getReceipt?trxNo={REFERENCE}. When someone sends you a payment via M-Pesa, a receipt is generated at this URL. cheki fetches the receipt, parses it, and tells you whether the payment is real, who sent it, and for how much. This takes 2 to 10 seconds.

What information you need

To check a M-Pesa payment, ask the sender for the transaction reference number from their receipt. That's all you need, no account number required.

  • Transaction reference (e.g. SE12345678)
  • If accessing from outside Ethiopia, cheki provides a fallback link

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a M-Pesa payment was successful?

Select M-Pesa Ethiopia on cheki, enter the transaction reference number, and click Verify. If the payment exists, cheki shows you the sender name, receiver name, amount, and date. If it doesn't exist, the payment was not completed or the receipt is fake.

Can I check a M-Pesa payment without the receipt?

You need the transaction reference number. This is shown on the receipt and in the M-Pesa app's transaction history. Without it, there is no way to look up a M-Pesa transaction through public endpoints.

Is checking M-Pesa payments free?

Yes. cheki checks M-Pesa payments for free with no limits. check.et charges 499 ETB/month after 200 checks for the same data. cheki uses the same public M-Pesa endpoint.
